How soon after giving birth can you start taking the Contraceptive Pill?

Hi there, I'm asking a question for a friend of mine who is pregnant. She wants to know how soon after giving birth can she start taking the pill. I told her its usually after your first period after birth, but when she checked with her midwife, the midwife told her it's safe to take it 10 days after the birth?? I have never heard of this before and wondered if any of you ladies have.
